Comment:
Microsporidium sp. spores - 1.5 - 2 microns long. – Direct faecal preparation stained with modified Trichrome blue stain. Intestinal microsporidiosis in patients with AIDS results in intractable diarrhoea; Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most common species responsible. Note the characteristic belt-like structure running diagonally or equatorially visible in some of the spores. However, EM examination is the gold standard for determining to species level.
